It’s that time of year again, the time for recruiting new agents, even though recruiting should be done year around, now is a great time to brush up on our skills, while talking to new and potential prospects. Early in my career I responded to many recruiting ads. They all had something in common: a salesman trying to close me as hard as I would close my prospects by pitching me the idea of my “warm market”. In other words, try to sell my family and friends first. Well, they didn’t know my family and friends because that was not an option. I soon made the decision that if any recruiter pitched me the idea of a warm market, I was not going to pursue that position. In fact, it became my auto decline for that agency.
That being said, I still needed to find a home. To consider any organization, I wanted to make sure the current agents had good things to say about that agency. I started talking to more and more agents – not the recruiters or HR departments. I figured the best and most accurate information was going to come from that source.
Here are a few tactic I found to work on recruiting:
A) Drive around prospective businesses
B) Cold Calling, start talking to prospective agents (Word of Mouth)
C) Social Media
D) Developed a strategy / goal on the number of new hires
E) Talked to family, friends, neighbors – Ask for them to help to rate the company
I found it to be very beneficial. This brings me back to the title ‘How to be an effective Recruiter’ which simply means talk about your career and the opportunities you have experienced especially with the company you work for. I love what I do so when I speak to others my passion is real. My opportunities at Compass Health, first as a retail store Agent, and now as Director of Business Development, are the right fit. I found a great opportunity and I wanted to share it. You just need to talk about how fortunate you have been since entering this industry, choosing to work for Compass Health, and that passion will rub off on several good candidates. At that point, a simple nudge in the right direction and you could be on your way to become ‘the most effective recruiter’.
